Week 2/3

end of week 2? by Pixiefarts
end of week 2? a photo by Pixiefarts on Flickr.

This picture is from last year flock.

Looks like my 9 quail are showing more of their chest feathers. It looks like I have 6 males this time around. Wow! Are you kidding me. I will be keeping all 3 females, PLUS 1 male. That ratio was very good for my hutch. The rest will grow out and go into the freezer.

Sunday Dinner:
We made pizza last night with my sourdough starter. Ooooo Yummy!
I divided the dough in to quarters and rolled them out thin, precooked for a couple minutes. Everyone made their own custom pizzas. My sister made a great salad too! I think that dough will work well on the grill, come this summer.

Sourdough Starter

Sourdough Starter by Pixiefarts

I'm making a cheated sourdough starter. I used yeast to jump start it. Last time I tried to get "wild yeast" nothing happened. I woke up to this all ballooned up and leaking on my counter this Sunday morning

2c lukewarm water
2c flour
1tbs yeast
1tbs honey

(Note: Too much yeast..... next time 1/2 as much)
Update: Last night (day 2), I took out 1C of starter to make the sponge for bread tonight & fed IT. When I woke up this am the starter filled my Pyrex mixing bowl!

Last night was very nice and sunny. I decided to take advantage of the evening light and look over my garlic bed. I made sure nothing was crowded & covered them with some leaves & mulch. Come on July! I'm ready for Garlic!

Clawhammer

I ordered the Wayne Erbsen's Clawhammer Book & CD today. I'm stuck right now & I can play 2 songs pretty well. Cold Antler Farm Blog is hosting a clawhammer online class with this book. I'm going to follow along and see if I can stick with it!

Total 9

9 out of 13 coturnix quail is not to shabby for shipped eggs from Arkansas in February !

Thank you sis for the picture!

I also talked to my co-worker about duck eggs this year. She said no problem, she has 3 Muscovy ducks in her back yard. She doesn't eat the eggs, she thinks it is gross and tosses the eggs. Her loss, my gain! woo hoo!!!

Spring, Stop Hiding! I know your there~

It's official, 2011 growing season is on its way!

Last night five quail hatched with no problems and four more left in the "cooler-bator". I made a new brooder from a 35 gallon tote. I cut open the top and secured mesh wire with zip ties. It looks so sharp! My sister got to see a little baby quail pop out of the egg. She took this photo of the first fuzzy butt before she left.

Popping up like popcorn! 6-8 weeks from now I'll have fresh eggs.

Temperatures are getting a little warmer. I heard a rumor of 51 degrees on Wednesday! I think I might try and plant some lettuce this weekend. I have leftover seeds from last year. Green Leaf & Butter Head seeds are all mixing up in a bag. I don't want them to go to waste.
